Orchid Potting Mix - Peat/Perlite Mix

This is the potting mix that we rely on at Stony Brook Orchids. This is a loose, well-draining, mix of Canadian sphagnum peat moss and perlite. We've had great success growing Phalaenopsis and Oncidium orchids in this mix, by itself, or mixed one to one with our fine bark mix. The 1:1 mix is particularly good for other orchid genera. One bag of mix is enough for four orchids in six inch pots.

Orchid Potting Mix - Fine Bark Mix

In addition to relying on our peat mix, we also use a mix of fine fir bark, spongerock, and charcoal. Besides using bark mix by itself, we often combine it one to one with our Peat/Perlite mix. The combined medium is good for orchids whose roots like a little more air, suuch as Oncidiums, Miniature Cattleyas, Cattleyas, and Paphiopedilums.

Dyna-Gro Fertilizer

Dyna-Gro Orchid Fertilizer

We find Dyna-Gro to be a wonderful orchid fertilizer. Not only does it provide a non-urea form of nitrogen, but it also includes the trace minerals required for healthy plants. It's a great general-purpose fertilzer that's good for all plants, especially your orchids. Mix 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water and then water your orchids with this mixture every time you water. A weak feeding with every watering will help your plants thrive.

Plastic Pots

These are the round, green pots that we use everyday in our greenhouse. They're lightweight, so they're easy to carry; they're non-porous, so you don't have to water as often; they have lot of drainage holes, so your orchid roots get a lot of air; and they're inexpensive. If you're showing off your orchid at home, we recommend placing your plant, green pot and all, inside a decorative pot. Whenever it's time to water take the plant out of the decorative pot, water, drain, and replace.
